Serving Size - How to Determine

Q.  How do I determine the serving size for my label?

A.  The Reference Amounts Customarily Consumed (RACC) from the U.S. food labeling regulations help determine serving size for labels. Foods are listed by food group.  Some serving sizes are listed by weight; some are listed by household measure.

In determining serving size, manufacturers refer to the RACC and list a serving size as close to the RACC as possible but in an amount easily understood by the consumer.  For household measures, whole or common fractions are used.  For weights, serving is listed in a unit that most closely corresponds with the reference weight.  For single serve containers, see specific rules in the regulations to determine if dual column labeling is required.
